Submissions

The Journal of Microliterature takes its submission guidelines and process very seriously, but at the same time tries to accommodate many different writers’ styles.  We understand that each journal has its own needs and wants, and this often leads to confusion for many writers.  Therefore, we’ve simplified our guidelines but ask that you respect them.  Submissions that do not conform to our guidelines are unlikely to be accepted.

Submissions Schedule

Our schedule allows for rolling submissions, meaning we allow authors to submit their works throughout the year without regard to deadlines.  We are currently accepting submissions.

Submission Process and Timeline

We employ a blind review process whereby your work will be read without knowledge of the writer’s name, personal information, qualifications, or past submissions.  We require that once a work is submitted, we retain all rights for first publishing for 30 days, after which the author may submit the work to another journal for rights to first publish.  Should we accept a work after 30 days from its submission date, we will contact the author for permission.  If your work is not accepted for publication, you will receive a thank you e-mail.  We would like to emphasize that this is an extraordinarily quick response time, and do so for the benefit of the author.

Author Payment and Rights

Authors will not be paid for acceptance of the work to the online or print versions of the Journal of Microliterature.  Authors retain all rights to republish their accepted and published work, but the republish must cite the Journal of Microliterature as its original publisher, preferably in MLA format at the beginning or end of the work.  Once a work is submitted and accepted, we retain the right to publish the work online and/or in print.

Submission Guidelines

The format of the work should be without indents and with one space between paragraphs.  Please include the title, author’s name (formatted as you would like it published), and an accurate word count, as well as a short third-person biography at the end of the work; these will be removed by the Executive Editor when sent to the review panel for consideration.  Personal contact information is not required; please do not include page numbers.

Simultaneous submissions are not permitted, but multiple submissions are.  If you are submitting multiple works, submit them separately.

As a note, the third-person biography should be appropriately (professionally) toned and be approximately 3-5 lines in length.  Inappropriate or unprofessional biographies will rule the entire submission as ineligible and will be rejected immediately.

Regarding Content

Works should be wholly original and not directly or explicitly based off another author’s story or characters.  Works with violence, sexuality, and/or explicit language are permitted as long as we acknowledge it as pertinent to the work.  Please be aware that we only accept works between 1-1000 words; works exceeding this range will not be considered for publication.
